Where the light still reaches.

The epipelagic. Sunbeams fracture across the surface and pour down in shafts. Ninety percent of marine life you have ever seen lives in this thin, brilliant band of water.

Twilight Zone · 200–1000m

The light begins to fail.

Color drains away. Marine snow — the slow fall of organic matter — drifts past like ash. Here the ocean takes its first deep breath of darkness, and carbon sinks toward the deep for centuries.

Midnight Zone · 1000–4000m

No sun has ever touched this.

The bathypelagic. Total darkness — and yet, points of cold light appear. Life here makes its own. Bioluminescence is not the exception in the deep ocean; it is the rule.

Something vast moves past.

A silhouette glides through the black — older than us, larger than our boats, indifferent to our presence. We are guests in a world we have barely begun to map, and are already learning to harm.

The hadal floor. A single amber lure burns in absolute dark — patient, ancient, alive. More people have walked the moon than have stood here. And still, our plastic has arrived before us.
